On December 15, 2020, Wuhan University (China)-Kathmandu University (Nepal) "Hydropower Research Center for Himalaya Region" unveiling ceremony was held at Wuhan University. The ceremony was conducted in a combination of online and offline methods. Professor Li Fei, Vice President of Wuhan University, Professor Wang Jianbo, Deputy Dean of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, Professor Xiong Lihua, Dean of the School of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering, Professor Qian Zhongdong, Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Science, and Chinese Director of the Himalaya Hydropower Research Center , Former Vice President of Kathmandu University, Professor Bhola Thapa, Director of the Himalaya Hydropower Research Center, Mewang Gyeltshen, Energy Project Specialist of the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Professor Bim Prasad Shrestha, Director of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Office of the President of Kathmandu University, and Deputy Faculty of Engineering, Kathmandu University Professor Hari Prasad Neopane and others attended the ceremony, which was presided over by Li Xiaoshu, Director of International Exchange Department of Wuhan University.


Professor Bhola Thapa of Kathmandu University said that Wuhan University and Kathmandu University have carried out in-depth cooperation on hydraulic machinery and sand wear. The establishment of the center will promote further cooperation. The cooperation areas include hydropower development, power station construction and operation, etc., and jointly promote the Himalayas. Reasonable development and utilization of hydropower.


Commissioner Mewang Gyeltshen of the International Comprehensive Mountain Development Center said that the Himalayas contain abundant hydropower resources. The reasonable development of hydropower resources is conducive to driving the economic and social development of the region. The International Comprehensive Mountain Development Center will cooperate with Himalaya Hydropower Center to develop more Research work.


Professor Xiong Lihua, Dean of the School of Water Conservancy and Hydropower, reviewed the cooperation between the school and the Kathmandu University College of Engineering, and said that the establishment of the Himalayan Hydropower Research Center is in line with the national strategy, and the school will provide more support in the construction and operation of the center.


Professor Qian Zhongdong, the Chinese director of the center, expressed his gratitude to Vice President Li Fei, the Department of International Exchange, the Institute of Science and Technology Development, and the School of Water Resources and Hydropower for their continuous support in his speech, and said that the center will closely focus on the key to the development of hydropower resources in the Himalayas Work on issues, build the center into an international platform for scientific research cooperation, talent training, and practical application, and form a regional think tank in the field of hydropower resource development.
