INTRODUCTION
Dr. Bin Dong is Professor of Department of Agricultural Water Resources Engineering, School of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering, Wuhan University (WHU) and Vice-chairman of Working Group on Modernization and Revitalization of Irrigation Schemes, ICID.
He received his B.S. in irrigation and drainage engineering at Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (WUHEE) in 1991 and Ph.D. in water resources and hydropower engineering at WHU in 2002. He had more than 20 years teaching and undertaking research at WHU. The main teaching courses include Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, Principle of Water Saving Irrigation, Water Environment. Besides, he also involved in training programs to farmers for the dissemination of water saving irrigation technology and non-point source pollution control in rice-based cropping systems.
He has extensive field level experience, both practical and research, related to irrigation and drainage engineering, agricultural water management, irrigation experiment, irrigation system rehabilitation and modernization, operation and maintenance of irrigation systems, performance monitoring and evaluation. He specialized in water saving irrigation principle and technique, efficient water and fertilizer use for paddy rice and farm water environment improvement in rice-based irrigation systems.
He has had a significant role in research grants and consultancies, hosting and participating in 20 more research projects of China National 863 Plan, the National Natural Science Foundation, European Union and Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO). Dr. Dong has collaborated in research with international organizations, research institutes and universities, including FAO, International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), International Water Management Institute (IWMI), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), the Ohio State University (OSU), USA, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal, Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), Cambodia and National University of Laos, Laos.
His awards included the Second Award of Science & Technology Progress, Jiangxi Provincial Government (2019) for “Key technologies and application of farmland non-point source pollution prevention and control in Poyang Lake Basin”; the First award of Agricultural Water-saving Technology from Ministry of Water Resources (2010) for “Research and application of integrated approaches of water saving, yield sustainability and nutrient loading reduction in rice-based cropping systems”; the First Award of Science and Technology Progress, Ministry of Education (2006) for “Research and application of efficient irrigation water use at different scales” and the Second Award of Water Science, Ministry of Water Resources (2006) for “Study on water saving strategies in irrigation system of Yellow River basin”.
